Hello, my name is Denise Burt and I am a graphic artist based in Copenhagen.

I work primarily with new music. Which means I make a lot of CD designs. I’ve made over 250 in fact, over the last ten years. You could say that I’m fairly familiar with the 120mm square format.

It’s not that I love CDs: all the bad plastic, shiny discs and tiny booklets (although, over the years, I have grown fond of its strict little frame) – it’s the fantastic challenge of working with a genre of music called new music.

New music is contemporary classical music. Which is the technically right way to describe it, but doesn’t really get across that new music is contemporary art. There are a lot of big ideas being explored by incredible musicians who push at the limits of their craft to create original expressions about life – and about music itself.

I got into working with new music by accident. I’m an outsider to the world of music. Anything I’ve learnt has purely been through meeting composers and artists and trying to engage with their work and ideas as a graphic designer. Through the journey I’ve been on so far in new music, I’ve discovered that it provides the most amazing and pure challenge: to find an image that tells a story about music that is in some way meaningful. New music tends to be very ideas-based so there is rich ground for inspiration.

CDs won’t be around forever. Though they are still (incredibly) the mainstream format for releasing new music. The challenge of making a visual experience to communicate a musical one will always be there, because music can’t do that for itself – recorded music must have some form of visual in order to distinguish itself out in the world. The goal is to make people curious and to attract more listeners to an artform that deserves much more attention and appreciation.

I’m interested in exploring new formats and new ways to communicate and share new music beyond the CD. Limited editions, digital platforms – there are many new possibilities waiting to be explored.
